DETROIT – Happy friday!
It’s going to be noticeably cooler today, and even cooler this weekend.
Our skies cleared overnight which allowed temperatures to drop into the mid-30s to almost 40 degrees, with a constant breeze keeping the wind chill in the first 30 years as you set off this morning.
Sunrise today is at 7:20 a.m.
Soak up the sun on your Friday morning as more and more clouds move towards Metro Detroit with high winds. These winds will serve as a lake effect machine over the next few days.
We will see sun to partly sunny skies this afternoon. Highs will be around 50 degrees with gusty winds moving towards the SSW at 10-25 mph making it feel much cooler. This southwest wind means we won’t have freezing cold yet, and it will direct moisture from the Lake Michigan Lake effect mainly to the west and north of most of the metro area. Detroit for most of the day.
We will see a few light and scattered rain showers mid to late Friday afternoon, particularly in Jackson, Washtenaw and Livingston counties. We might see a few snowflakes mixing together later in the night as the temperatures drop. Layer up if you are planning to attend a high school playoff soccer game.
Sunset today is at 5:14 p.m.
Cool and humid weekend ahead
Saturday and Sunday will be very cold with morning lows near freezing on both days, and we will see more clouds making high pressure areas difficult.
This wind will continue to blow, bringing an irregular winter mix throughout Saturday. Expect downpours that come and go in the form of rain, sleet, and snow here and there. The ground remains warm enough not to fear ice on the roads.
Saturday’s highs will be in the lower 40s. Winds moving towards the WSW at 10-20 mph will maintain wind chills into the 1930s.
Sunday could be our first widespread, light and accumulated snow of the season!
The data from the computer model is still uncertain whether the expected precipitation will remain fully snowy only on Sunday. Expect mid to late morning flurries and as afternoon approaches it’s all happening now. If there is any snow left, we might see an inch of snow in the grassy areas, and it will be a tough travel day, so be careful!
Sunday temperatures will be in the 30s above nearly 40 degrees. It won’t be as gusty, but a constant breeze will move southwest at 13mph, gusting to 20mph.
Preview next week
A few flurries will persist early on Monday, but the first few days of next week look fairly dry with temperatures slowly rising.
We will be back in the mid-1950s on Wednesday, but a cold front will bring showers late in the day and a chill next weekend.
