The school organizes a summer fair to launch a new outdoor space
CATCOTE Academy’s annual summer fair this month will serve as the grand opening of a wonderful new outdoor space for the community to enjoy.
Hartlepool School, which caters to pupils with special educational and physical needs, wants people to come and experience its new Outdoor Fitness and Learning Zone (OFALZ).
As well as providing the ideal location on the Catcote Road site for those already at the Academy, OFALZ is also open to bookings from outside groups across the city.
It’s the perfect facility to develop new skills or take part in a physical activity, with Catcote Academy inviting anyone interested to come to the Summer Fair on Saturday 16th July to experience it.
Lisa Greig, Director of Catcote Academy, said: “We are truly proud of what has been achieved with this fantastic domain that everyone can benefit from.
“Whether it’s local scout groups, holistic therapists, private nurseries or even fitness boot camp leaders, we believe our outdoor fitness and learning area is suitable for a wide variety of people in our city.”
“That was the goal when we went through the process of planning and building the area. Yes, we wanted it to help us deliver a high quality, relevant and balanced education to all of our students, but we also wanted to open it up for the benefit of the community as a whole.
The OFALZ has been specially designed for children, young people and adults with learning difficulties and disabilities.
But after successfully raising the £443,000 needed to build it with funding from Sport England, Wolfson Foundation, Bailey Thomas Trust, Garfield Weston and James Knott, Catcote wants parents, friends and local groups to know they can also use it.
The area includes a wheelchair-friendly track, an alternative rough track that can be used by more experienced runners, an obstacle course and two junior football pitches.
There are also outdoor gym facilities, sensory play and environmental learning areas, an outdoor classroom with fire pit and an area for Forestry School and the Duke of Edinburgh’s Awards.
To take a look at the OFALZ, head to the Catcote Summer Fair where there will be entertainment including face painting, stilt walkers, live music and a DJ to put on get everyone in the holiday spirit with a host of activities for visitors.
You will have the opportunity to make bird feeders, go on scavenger hunts, listen to storytelling and roast marshmallows.
And there will also be food and craft stalls to keep everyone busy on a day when Catcote Academy is keen to promote the brilliant work that is going on and highlight what the exciting new learning area has to offer. .
Lisa added: “It should be a fantastic day and it will be great for the people of Hartlepool to come and see what we are doing at Catcote Academy. Hopefully the sun will shine too!
“We have secondary, post-16 and post-19 students at one of our three Catcote locations across the city who know what we offer, but we hope our fair will also show others how we focus on improving life opportunities for young people as they enter the world of adults.
The Catcote Summer Fair takes place on Saturday 16th July from 11am to 2pm and is open to visitors.
