The Princess of Wales is famous for her love of outdoor activities, and there’s a big reason why she loves sailing, hiking, and skiing, among other outdoor pursuits.

Princess Kate recently became the godfather of the last expedition of Captain Preet Chandi, 33 across Antarctica, which sees the Army doctor aiming to traverse the 1,000-mile terrain solo and unassisted.

The royal is said to have chosen to become the patron of Captain Chandi’s efforts due to his position as the champion of the benefits of being in the wild.

“The Princess has long been a champion of the huge impact the outdoors can have on our well-being and the life skills it nurtures, such as confidence and resilience,” Kensington Palace said.

The royal is right to appreciate the benefits of being in nature. According to mental health charity Mind, spending time in nature has been found to help with mental health issues such as anxiety and depression.

The charity says research into ecotherapy (a type of treatment that involves doing activities outside in nature) has been shown to be helpful for mild to moderate depression.

The Princess of Wales is voicing her support for mental health charities, even teaming up with Prince William to record a special with BBC Radio 1. News in honor of World Mental Health Day.

The youth-focused information program invited the royal couple to lead a discussion with activists and experts in the field of mental health.

Addressing the variety of ways to deal with mental health issues, Princess Kate said: “There is no right or wrong, different things will work for different people.”
