Small Porch Ideas to Dress Up Your Outdoor Space
Your porch is often the first place you greet guests or just hang out with your neighbors on a balmy summer night. But when you have a small porch, you have to get a little creative to squeeze in the space for lounging, as well as some fun decorating additions.
Try these small porch decorating ideas to make the most of every little square inch.
Choose Your Porch Furniture Wisely
Even with a small porch, you can probably provide a place to sit, whether it’s a comfy bench or loveseat or a few chairs to relax on.
Keep it on a smaller scale
You don’t want to fill every square inch with your furniture, so look for smaller-scale options. HGTV designer Breegan Janes, who works with TJ Maxx and Marshalls, recommends thinking small. “Bistro sets are a great way to lean into the intimate setting of a small space; they create such a cozy, cafe-like atmosphere for your guests.”
Look for easy-to-move porch furniture
Think portable, foldable, or versatile when it comes to small porch furniture. “Beanbags add texture to a space and are easy to pop in and out if you need extra seating,” says Janes. “Functional furniture like a collapsible serving cart is easy to get in and out of when you have guests over.”
Think of light and airy materials
Using open-weave rattan or other airy materials can make your furniture much less substantial (and that’s a good thing). “Woven furniture creates a really open and airy setting without feeling cluttered,” says Janes.
Add the Right Front Porch Accessories
To really show off a small porch, accessories will be key. “My biggest piece of advice is don’t let a little space hold you back,” says Janes. “You can always let your personality shine.”
Don’t be afraid to be bold with your accessories
You may think you need to keep it simple when coming up with small porch decorating ideas, but don’t be afraid to add some personality to your accessories. “When it comes to decorating any outdoor space, my motto is maximalism,” says Janes. “You can accessorize your furniture with bold, eye-catching accent pieces.”
Planters can take up valuable floor space on your small porch, or you can get creative to save room for porch seating and other furniture. “Hanging planters and wall planters are the perfect way to save space while adding greenery to your porch,” says Janes.
Change it for the seasons
You don’t have to keep the same decor from spring to fall. Switch up your throws, planters and other decorations: opt for a lighter throw and a planter of tulips in the spring, an elegant pile of pumpkins and cozy candles in the fall.
Go beyond planters
When decorating a small porch, don’t be afraid to bring interior design elements outside. “Try adding cozy accent pieces like string lights, throw pillows, or area rugs to make your space inviting,” says Janes.
