M’sians share 6 parenting challenges they face amid MCO and how to overcome them

The COVID-19 pandemic has turned our lives upside down. Ffrom remote work to social distancing and school closures, there’s a lot for everyone to deal with, especially parents. Therefore, we have brought together several Malaysians to share their parenting struggles during the pandemic, as well as some possible solutions to these challenges.

1. “Seeing them locked up at home and not enjoying the outdoors is depressing”

“My four-year-old used to go to the playground every night, but now, to keep him safe, we thought it best for him to stay home until he is vaccinated.” — Venessa, 32

Outdoor activities provide children with the opportunity to explore the natural environment through fun adventures.🌱 In addition to exercising and testing their physical limits, they can also develop their social skills through interactions with other children.

Solution: Since unvaccinated children are encouraged to stay home during the pandemic, parents can try bringing them the outdoors instead! Some fun options include inflatable pools, indoor camping, or even a scavenger hunt at home! ⛺️

2. “My children simply refuse to put on their masks”

“My child cries when we try to put a mask on her. She doesn’t understand why she has to wear it and why she can’t give her friends a big hug like before. — Daniel, 30

Some children are too young to understand the importance of SOPs and the dangers of Covid-19. Since wearing a mask can be uncomfortable, many children refuse to wear face masks. 😷

Solution: Agree with your children to only leave the house when they are wearing their masks. Respect this rule scrupulously each time before leaving. No mask = no jalan-jalan. When they comply, remember to reward them. Consistency is key!

3. “I get very anxious when my child goes back to school”

“Every time the school reopens, I am constantly worried about my daughter who is sitting in a class of 30 students. But I’m glad the school has strict SOPs in place to keep students safe. —Lee, 36

It is undeniable that the school is one of the places at risk, but do not worry! Together with parents and teachers, we can make school a safe place for our children. 💝

Solution: Liaise closely with teachers and other parents to ensure that all school activities are well planned in accordance with SOPs. Each week before returning to school, ensure that all children perform self-tests using government-approved RTK-Antigen test kits.

4. “Supervising my child’s online studies while working from home is exhausting”

“Since my kids started learning online, I have to constantly monitor them to make sure they are paying attention in class. I find it quite tiring as they are very easily distracted. — May 33

Helping and guiding children through their studies online can be exhausting, especially when there is also a lot to do at work! 😫 But do you know that there are simple and effective ways to help your children’s online learning?

Solution: Create a space conducive to online learning. Remove all distractions from the learning environment, including cell phones, board games, and television. Moreover, you can also set up flexible schedules for their classes and tasks. Be sure to include breaks to strike a healthy balance between school and playtime.

5. “Kids are so loud they interrupt my online meetings”

“I generally avoid having online meetings when working from home, as I’m pretty sure the background noise of my kids playing or crying can interrupt meetings.” —Omar, 37

If you have two or more young children at home, you probably know what we’re talking about. And while we absolutely love our kids, we also understand how frustrating (and in some cases, annoying) these noises can be! 😭

Solution: When an important meeting is approaching, be sure to keep your kids busy with fun tasks like finishing coloring books and watching educational animations! But be sure to only give them these “special tasks” on “special occasions”, such as meetings, so they don’t get bored quickly.

6. “Vaccinating my children is a HUGE challenge. they are afraid of needles

“My child is afraid of needles. We struggled to finish her first dose at the PPV, as she couldn’t stop crying and thrashing. — Hanim, 30 years old

Fear of injections is common among children. In addition to needles, the intimidating environment in vaccination centers is another factor that increases fear in children when injecting. However, we believe that with the right methods, we can help our children overcome this fear and improve their injection experience.

Solution: Find fun and educational videos that teach kids about vaccinations and the importance of getting vaccinated. Try to improve their immunization experience by leading them to child-friendly VPPs and encouraging them through the process. Don’t forget to reward them for their bravery after the injections! 🎁
