BUFFALO, NY (WKBW) – The State health department says there have been just over 900 new cases of COVID-19 statewide Wednesday. In In Los Angeles County, California, they are registering a thousand new cases a day.
“The greatest risk to themselves and to others are unvaccinated people or those who have only received one injection of RNA vaccines,” said Dr Thomas Russo of the UB Jacobs School of Medicine. .
The reinstated mask mandate in Los Angeles comes as the Delta variant becomes more prominent.
“It’s very contagious and it will find you eventually,” Dr. Russo said.
Dr. Russo said he thinks Buffalo is in a good position, but we haven’t come out of the woods.
“We have had a fairly good degree of vaccination, our job is not yet finished, we still have a significant minority in our population that has not yet been vaccinated,” Dr Russo said.
55.3% of Erie County residents are fully immunized. Dr Russo said he believes things will continue to develop for the better
“We’re unlikely to have an inside mask warrant for fully vaccinated people here in buffaloes,” Dr Russo said.
Children 11 and under still cannot get the vaccine. As the school year approaches, Dr Russo said schools should do everything possible to keep teachers and students safe.
“The best way to protect yourself is by using an inside mask packed with other public health measures,” Dr. Russo said.
