Living space: how to clean painted walls | Home and outdoor

Freshly painted walls can instantly brighten up a room, making a dull space cleaner, brighter and more attractive. It’s also a much less expensive option than putting up new drywall or buying new furniture for a room, and for this reason paint is often the first tool landlords and renters turn to when cleaning. they seek to improve a space. Once you’ve taken the time to paint a room, keep it fresh with regular cleaning and maintenance.

Preventative maintenance of freshly painted walls

Preventative maintenance means less time spent scrubbing later. Maintain a freshly painted look on your walls by keeping them free of dust and stains. First, vacuum the walls with a soft brush attachment. Then wipe them down with a cloth-covered broom or mop (spray dusting agent for best results) or use an electrostatic dusting pad. Wipe off fingerprints and other marks soon after they appear. Avoid using an excessive amount of water or scrubbing too hard on stubborn areas.

How to clean walls painted with latex paint

You can wash walls painted with latex paint using warm water and a non-abrasive all-purpose cleaner. Dip a clean sponge in the water, then wring it out. Gently rub the wall. Pay particular attention to areas that are touched often, such as around doorknobs and light switches. Rinse with a second sponge and clear water. Be careful not to wet the areas around sockets, light switches, telephone sockets or other electrical connections. When cleaning of these areas becomes necessary, turn off the electricity at the circuit breaker before cleaning.

For stubborn stains, such as fingerprints, newspaper stains, or scuff marks, make a paste of baking soda and water and scrub the area with a non-abrasive pad. If the cleaner (or white vinegar and water) does not remove the grime or stain from the painted woodwork, wipe down the woodwork with a cloth dampened with rubbing alcohol.

How to clean walls painted with oil paint

You can wash walls painted with oil-based paint the same way as walls painted with latex, replacing the cleaner or white vinegar mixture with a detergent solution (see below). Wring the sponge or cloth until it is slightly damp. Textured painted walls, such as those with a trowel finish, can be dust catchers and may require more thorough cleaning. Add 1 ounce of borax to every pint of water to clean the wall more thoroughly.
