BUFFALO – A run-of-the-river final was in favor of the Elkhart Elks as they knocked down the Buffalo Bison, 34-33, in Friday night’s season opener.
The Elks were 32-point underdogs heading into Friday night’s game against Buffalo. They were shut out 41-0 last year against them, but fans surely buzzed after their season opener.
The Elks took a 6-0 lead before Buffalo hit a touchdown that established the game at 7-6. Elkhart responded with a touchdown from Cain Foster, who also converted the two-run attempt that put them ahead 14-7.
The Elks extended their lead to 21-7 at halftime.
The two sides traded goals scored to start the second half as Elkhart led 28-14 with 4:50 left in the third quarter. The final four minutes of the quarter saw Buffalo score 13 unanswered points before the Elks managed to find the end zone for the fifth time with 7:01 to go.
Buffalo responded with another strike, but still trailed 34-33.
The Bison had a chance to score a game-winning game with six seconds left, but managed a fourth interrupted pass by CJ Pharis.
Elkhart’s Cale Starr and Chase Walker both scored two touchdowns apiece in the Elks’ season opener.
The Elks will host the Grapeland Sandies next week for their second out of district game.
