Grist House Millvale expansion plans = more indoor and outdoor space

Since its opening in 2014, Grist House Craft Brewery has always delivered delicious beer and a welcoming atmosphere – “Like drinking in your backyard”, as co-founder Kyle Mientkiewicz puts it. Even the name of the brewery was deliberately chosen to express the warmth they bring to the workplace. They wanted people to understand exactly where they were coming from from the start, and Grist House sums it up perfectly. “Grist” is the cracked grain used in the brewing process, and “House” refers to the family-friendly, inviting nature they imbue into their products and the place itself.

And this feeling of welcome in the family is not a coincidence! Kyle and his co-founder (and brother-in-law) Brian Eaton shared a deep love of home brewing that eventually blossomed at their beloved brick-and-mortar location in Millvale. Known for its creative beers and glowing fire pits, this place is a destination for locals and visitors alike.

In 2019, the brewery announced the addition of a new production plant be housed in a former missile command center in Collier Township. But this new facility isn’t the only expansion effort undertaken by Grist House. This winter, the Millvale site will open a brand new space that will build on its existing dining hall and brasserie. Read on for more details on the Grist House Millvale expansion.

Grist House Millvale expansion details

Of course, you can still enjoy the same great beers and friendly faces at Grist House. But this exciting development means more interior capacity (with plenty of bathrooms), more outdoor seating, and more room for the festivals, food trucks, and bonfires everyone loves so much. The front of the building will feature a large corner bar and lounge area, as well as a gift shop to purchase Grist House shirts, stickers and other merchandise.

The new space prioritizes an airy layout and features garage door windows that open onto the beer garden. This way, you can sit at the bar inside and watch the Penn State game or sit outside to enjoy the fresh air and close-up views of Girty’s Run. Speaking of football — as any Penn State fan who visits the brewery knows — the dining room TVs are all tuned in on game days, and that tradition is going nowhere.

Extension of Grist House Millvale

In the meantime, while builders and brewers work hard to make this new space all it can be, the bar is open and, as always, there’s a ton of seating outside. If you get hungry, there’s an array of star-studded food trucks that grace the lot most days. If you’re thirsty, you can linger a few glasses of their latest brew or grab a growler or six-pack to go. If you’re just looking for a place to settle down on a fall evening in Pittsburgh, feel free to take the whole family to the beer garden (and don’t forget the dog)!

This expansion is an exciting step for this neighborhood favorite, allowing Grist House to grow its community and deepen its roots. And as they say, “It’s a place where drinking buddies become lifelong friends, and regulars become family.”
