“It’s big and grand and contemporary,” said listing agent Heather E. Stein of Brown Harris Stevens. “The owners have spent years doing a gut renovation.” They also added an elevator and two more floors to the top of the building.

Entered at street level, the garden level comprises an open entrance hall and a tiled entrance which leads to a large reception area on the south side of the house. A central paneled console in the middle of the floor contains a cloakroom, a hidden staircase to the cellar, the elevator and a powder room.

Architectural and design details include a central staircase, hardwood floors and high ceilings.

Towards the rear of this level, a large informal dining room or living room offers a full bar, wine fridge, and French doors that open to the back yard.

The interior spaces of the East 38th Street home have an “airy openness and substantial proportions,” Ms. Stein said.

The upstairs living room floor houses a living room with 10ft 8in ceilings and a bay window overlooking the neighboring brownstones. The north-facing eat-in kitchen in modern white lacquer includes two deep sinks with Dornbracht hardware, a ventilated Wolf six-burner stove with a hob, Miele ovens and dishwasher, as well as a refrigerator, freezer and a paneled Sub-Zero wine cooler.

The 8,000 square foot home has six bedrooms, five full bathrooms and two partial bathrooms.

The third level of the 13-room home houses the upstairs master bedroom, which features a wood-burning fireplace, large closets, and a six-fixture master bathroom with a separate toilet. A double exposure boudoir or library faces the bedroom. For more privacy, these rooms can be separated from the rest of the house by the staircase landing.

The fourth floor features two large bedrooms, each with walk-in closets and en-suite bathrooms, as well as an open living area. There are two further bedrooms on the fifth floor, each with large terraces.

“One of the fifth-floor terraces has a spectacular view of the Chrysler Building,” Ms. Stein said.

The roof terrace offers an unobstructed view of the city.

With the terrace space, this level could also work well as an alternate master suite, she said.

The townhouse has the “coolest laundry room on the sixth floor, with two huge exposed walls of windows with spectacular views of New York City,” she said.

There is another bedroom and a full bathroom on this top floor.
