“If you are fully vaccinated and want to attend a small outdoor gathering with vaccinated and unvaccinated people, or have dinner at an outdoor restaurant with friends from multiple households, science shows that if you are vaccinated, you can do it safely without a mask. CDC director Dr Rochelle Walensky said Tuesday during a virtual briefing at the White House.

“In general, for people who have been vaccinated, outdoor activities without a mask are safe. However, we continue to recommend masking in crowded venues and outdoor venues, such as crowded stadiums and concerts where the ability to maintain physical distance is reduced and where many unvaccinated people may also be present, ”said Walensky. “We will continue to recommend it until widespread vaccination is achieved.”

But life has not completely returned to normal for people who are fully vaccinated.

CDC director Dr Rochelle Walensky announced the new recommendations for outdoor masks on Tuesday.

People are considered fully vaccinated by the CDC two weeks after the second dose of the Pfizer / BioNTech or Moderna vaccine or two weeks after the single-dose Johnson + Johnson vaccine.

President Joe Biden referred to the updated guidelines for wearing masks outdoors while remarking on the state of the pandemic on Tuesday, ahead of his first speech to Congress on Wednesday.

One of Biden’s top coronavirus advisers, Dr Anthony Fauci, has hinted strongly to CNN that the guidelines will be updated this week. Fauci told CNN’s Jim Acosta on Sunday that he didn’t want to get ahead of the CDC, but the agency “will release an update to its guidelines on what people who are vaccinated can do and even some that are not.” .

On Tuesday morning, ahead of the announcement of the updated mask guidelines, US Secretary of Health and Human Services Xavier Becerra told CBS This Morning that people vaccinated against Covid-19 will be able to resume a mode more normal life.

“The message is clear. You are vaccinated, guess what, you can go back to a more normal lifestyle. If you are not vaccinated you are still a danger. You are also still in danger,” Becerra said. . “Then get yourself vaccinated.”
